Damian’s Story

27 Years & Still Standing!

As I enter my 27th year with the Worcestershire County Cricket Club, my association goes back a lot further to when my dad played in 1964 and I played games on the outfield during lunch and tea intervals.

I never thought about cricket as I really wanted to be a footballer, I had trials with WBA and Arsenal and only started playing cricket at the ripe old age of 15, after dad suggested l play because I had nothing else to do in the summer

I was offered a trial at Worcestershire in 1979 for six weeks at the start of the season. At this stage I decided to give up wicket keeping and wanted to bat, unfortunately the 2nd team wicket keeper was away at university and I had to keep, this meant me batting down the order. I was not taken on the staff following the trial and I was gutted. Mike Vockins the secretary at Worcestershire called me and asked if l would be interested in having a trial to go on the Lords ground staff (MCC Young Cricketers), I had a trial in January 1980 and there were 160 applicants for 4 available places, I got lucky and was offered a place, which I took up in March 1980.

I had two seasons on the MCCYC Staff and the second year l spent most of the year playing for the Worcestershire 2nd XI and I had a good season finishing top of the batting averages and was offered my pro contract for 1983

I was contracted as a player from 1983 to 1996 when I was appointed 2nd XI Captain/Coach, in 2001 I also adopted the role of Academy Director which I still do to this day and my official title is Assistant Coach & Academy Director.

Assistant Coach & Academy Director

Becoming Academy Director has proved to be a catalyst for finding new talent not only within Worcestershire but throughout the Minor Counties around us.

Our Satellite Academies in Herefordshire, Shropshire and the Black Country coaches 12- 14 year olds, which in turn allows the cream of the young cricketers to feed into the main Worcestershire Academy.

Of the 12 players we had in the Academy last season, 11 have either played or had trials at Regional and National level from Midlands U15 to England U19.
